Two weeks ago, my parents were driving a Chevy Venture minivan. When driving, a deer smashed into the side of the van, with its head coming through the front, drivers window. The van was a mess. The hood was smashed, the front left fender, the headlight assembly and turning signal were gone, the front left fender, the drivers door and window. The estimates to repair the damage were over $4,000. My parents did not have the money. They called the insurance company to see if my husband could do the work for them, to save money. Of course, the insurance company agreed, anything for them to save paying out money. My parents shopped around the area for used parts and came across all parts for the van for under $500! My husband immediately began taking apart the mini van. He works full time as a sales engineer, so he didn't get started until almost 6 in the evening. With rain in the forecast, his priority was at least to get the front fender and door replaced, so the interior of the van would not get wet. He got the accomplished the first night. The biggest problem he encountered was the wiring for the replacement door did not match the wiring in the wrecked door. He rewired the door and like magic, it works like new. The next two evenings were spent putting all of the peices back together. The deer hit the van so hard, it bent the metal so the new fender was almost an inch below the hood. My husband pryed it up, so it looks just like new.
By using parts from the junk yard and having my husband doing all of the work for them, they saved almost $3500!
